Cause of abnormal Pap smear

There are a lot of factors that may be the cause of abnormal Pap smear. Cervical cells abnormalities are related to viral and bacterial infections, precancerous and cancerous conditions, vaginal use of medical preparations, sexual intercourse, and natural cell changes during the menopause, etc. That is why patients with abnormal results are often referred for additional diagnostic procedures.

It is difficult to say if a woman has a serious condition from just one abnormal Pap smear. In order to identify the cause of abnormal Pap smear different tests may be used. They are blood and cultural tests, DNA tests, visual inspection, microscopic examination and others. In each case the necessity of these tests can be determined by a doctor. It is important to follow all medical prescriptions if you have abnormal Pap smear results.

Sometimes the cause of abnormal Pap smear is unclear. It means that some changes in cells were detected, but there is no disease obviously present. This result is classified as ASCUS - Atypical Squamous Cells of Undetermined Significance. Such cell changes may be due to sexual relations, use of tampons, vaginal creams or jellies before the Pap smear test. But it is also possible that ASCUS indicates an early stage of a disease.

Sexually transmitted diseases (STD) are a common cause of abnormal Pap smear. People with STD’s can have various symptoms, including skin growths and blisters on genital organs, abnormal vaginal discharges, itching, burning and pain in the genital area. Some genital infections are asymptomatic, but they can cause serious health problems. For example, in majority of cases cancer of cervix develops in women infected by certain types of Human Papilloma Virus and these women usually have no visible signs of infection.

Starting from the cause of abnormal Pap smear doctors define the management of patients. Abnormal cell changes often return to normal without treatment. Most of the time, regular follow-up Pap smears are sufficient. If results show that there is a problem and they are confirmed by additional tests, the patient should get an appropriate treatment which may be use of drugs or surgery.

The treatment is more effective if the cause of abnormal Pap smear is found early. Surgery is usually used when a precancerous or cancerous disease is present. Mild precancerous conditions can be treated in a doctor’s office by a simple surgical procedure. But it is important to remember that prevention is always better than cure. Women should know about a possible cause of abnormal Pap smear result, undergo regular medical check-ups and try to prevent the development of diseases.
