A pap smear screening can detect vulvar vestibulitis and other disorders; if a woman has an abnormal vaginal discharge, additional testing is required. Testing should be done yearly. The condition is classified according to Bethesda system depending on the test results (normal or positive). To take a sample of the tissue that consists of mucus and cells, a doctor will widen the opening of the vagina with a speculum.
