If the ascus pap smear is not treated in a good time, the patient is running a risk of getting serious urinary infection, verruca, genital warts or cervical dysplasia. For this reason, risky surgery should be avoided until a more definitive diagnosis can be obtained with either a repeat exam or a biopsy. It is not unusual for cases like this to be read as normal by different doctors. A Digene Hybrid Capture Test is particularly helpful in this situation. Many pathologists will grade these as normal while others will grade them as abnormal. Defined as atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance, this term refers to the least abnormal grade. If the ascus pap smear is not treated in a good time, the patient is running a risk of getting serious urinary infection, verruca, genital warts or cervical dysplasia.
