There is no effective herpes medicine; if the results of colposcopy show genital herpes, the patient can only take antiviral drugs to lessen the pain. Steps should also be taken to prevent other people from getting infected. They are usually advised to take acyclovir or similar medication. Patients who suffer from frequent outbreaks and those with a poor immune system are prescribed antiviral treatment.
