Of the STD viruses, genital warts, herpes, and AIDs, genital warts are the only disease that is treatable with the leep procedure and colposcopy. Children may be infected by the virus at birth from their mothers. Actually about half of infants with widespread infection die, and the half who survive often have brain damage. The risk is highest when a woman contracts the virus for the first time late in pregnancy. So, if you have been infected with virus and are pregnant you need to treat the disease as soon as possible. If you have symptoms at the time of delivery, the baby can usually be protected from infection by a cesarean delivery (c-section).
