About 45 million people (12+ adolescents and adults) or 20% of the total population is infected by HSV with womenís risk as higher (25% female and 20% male infections). Male-to-female transmission appears more efficient than female-to-male. About 25% of adult population is infected and 80% of the infected are unaware. HSV is more commonly transmitted when no lesions are present.
