Cervical dysplasia intraepithelial is directly linked to human papilloma virus with ASCUS pap results. The Human papillomavirus, HPV, affects the cells within the surface layers of the cervix. Looking through a microscope of a sample of cells from a Pap smear, taken from the surface layers on the cervix, these cells will appear different in appearance and structure. When the abnormal cells are just in the first few layers of tissue, they are called low-grade squamous cells and, if they cells are in the deeper surface layer tissues, they are called high-grade squamous cells.
