Speculum is used so that the physician may get a better picture of cervix tissue about to be swabbed for Pap smear and HPV testing. The cone shaped neck of the uterus plays an important role on the woman's organism. It secretes mucus to keep sperm out of the uterus, or to store them for later use. It will develop a plug to hold the baby in when the woman is pregnant. It can dilate and contract in labor. Its secretions lubricate the whole vagina.
