Softening of the cervix may result from a history of cervical dysplasia removed via cryosurgery. In preparation for labor it softens (a process called ripening). This integrity is critical that the developing fetus can remain in the uterus until the time for delivery. It maintains its firmness and physical integrity as the uterus enlarges dramatically. This organ serves 2 major functions.
