Papillomavirus

Papillomavirus is a family of viruses that in Humans cause a range of abnormal cellular growths and on the cervix may be detected using a Pap smear such as HPV Hybrid capture. In many women, infection with certain types of hpv is the first step in the progression from a normal cervix to cervical cancer. This sexually transmitted disease is the main cause of cervical cancer. It induces the growth of abnormal cells that can become malignant. Cancer is unlikely to progress in women who donít smoke or have other cervical cancer risk factors. Without treatment severely dysplastic cells penetrate deeper layers of the cervix and spread to other organs, causing invasive cervical cancer. It usually takes many years for cancer of the cervix to develop.
