Cervical smears in a Pap smear are to detect HPV pre cancer conditions. The American Cancer Society recommends that women have yearly PAP tests beginning at age 18 or when they become sexually active. Some women may need more frequent screenings if they are at high risk for cancer of the cervix. The following are risk factors. Becoming sexually active before 18, if your mother took DES during pregnancy, if your sister or mother has or had cancer of the cervix, having had cancer of vagina or vulva, having a sexual partner who has or had cancer or the penis, or having had more than three sexual partners. Cervical smears in a Pap smear are to detect HPV pre cancer conditions.
