When abnormal cervical cell tissue is found, infections and viruses such as lichen sclerosis and human papillomavirus are often present. Abnormalities in the cervix can be detected by Pap smear tests only. The main cause of the cancer of the cervix is Human papillomavirus, which is sexually transmitted. In some women the immune system is able to fight this virus, but in others abnormalities may develop. When abnormal cervical cell tissue is found, infections and viruses such as lichen sclerosis and human papillomavirus are often present.

The virus may live in the organism for years undetected and slowly progress into invasive cancer. The vaccine against this virus is being studied and won’t be available in the nearest future, so every woman who is sexually active should be screened regularly. When abnormal cervical cell tissue is found, infections and viruses such as lichen sclerosis and human papillomavirus are often present.
