Pap Smear Test Result

A positive pap smear test result means that the patient suffers from vaginosis, cervical dysplasia or other HPV-related disorders. HPV is clearly associated as primary cause of cervical cancers; decisive testing adds assurance to reported findings. A newly Hybrid Capture or HPV DNA test offers the option of immediate additional testing if atypical cells are found. Low-grade risk classifications that borderline a normal can be a judgment call. Abnormalities range from slightly atypical (ASCUS or atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance) to invasive cancer. If deviation from the normal type for the area from which the specimen is taken, it is considered abnormal or atypical. The outcome of a cytology examination depends upon observation of certain cellular characteristics. A positive pap smear test result means that the patient suffers from vaginosis, cervical dysplasia or other HPV-related disorders.
