An abnormalpaptest doesn't necessarily mean that the patient has cervical cancer, but a colposcopy exam is required to make a proper diagnosis and avoid lichen sclerosis and other complications. These procedures give a better look at the cervix and allow the doctor to take a sample or atypical tissue and send it for further analysis. If the results are positive, the doctor may want to perform another examination or use a colposcopy and biopsy.
