Many cases of abnormalpapsmear are associated with human papillomavirus; many vulvar disorders may have serious complications and should be treated immediately. Women who are at risk for cervical cancer (smokers, with multiple sexual partners and a history of STD or HPV) should have these tests more frequently. To determine the nature of abnormalities shown by this test colposcopy and biopsy are used. Many cases of abnormalpapsmear are associated with human papillomavirus; many vulvar disorders may have serious complications and should be treated immediately.

Usually, these disorders are asymptomatic and cause no problems. Every woman is recommended to have this test yearly, because it is the only way to detect cervical dysplasia, various infections and cervical cancer on the early stages when they are easier to treat.
