The cause of the disease is unknown, but risk factors are mostly identified. It peaks in women of 25 to 35, with multiple sexual partners and early onset of sexual activity or early childbearing. Perinatal exposure to DES, history of sexually transmitted diseases, and injuries also increase the risk.
