Vaccine for cervical cancer prevention is in the future, cryotherapy and LEEP procedure are today's treatment for early cancer prevention. Testing for cancerous cells of the cervix is done through a Pap smear. It is important to have your annual exam to detect any symptoms of future cancerous tissue or cells, because early detection allows to treat atypical cells with mild methods. Serious stages often require surgucal treatment, which is not always successful. Many HPV infected women achieve immunity to abnormal cells of the cervix. They cannot be reinfected, nor transmit this particular strain of HPV. However since they carry the virus, they are still susceptible to other strains. After the age of 30 a combination of Pap smear and HPV test should be performed.
