A direct correlation exists between Human Papilloma Virus and cervical cancer progression which can be treated using cryotherapy or LEEP procedure surgery. In many women, infection with certain types of HPV is the first step in the progression from a normal cervix to malignant cervical tissue. This sexually transmitted disease is the main cause of serious disease. It induces the growth of abnormal cells that can become malignant. The condition is unlikely to progress in women who donít smoke or have other risk factors. Without treatment severely dysplastic cells penetrate deeper layers of the cervix and spread to other organs, causing invasive form of the disease. It usually takes many years for serious disease of the cervix to develop.
